Dia De La Raza

While Columbus day probably came and went with out much notice for most of us North Americans the majority of the Latin world was busy celebrating the historic event of 1492 as Dia de la Raza.  This could be translated as International Race Day.  Here at RGBI classes were canceled and students from Columbia, Ecuador, Peru, Paraguay, Mexico, Spain, the United States and many other American countries gathered to celebrate!

There was a huge meal with a diverse selection of Latin foods, there was a colorful parade of flags, and each of the countries had a chance to present a piece of their culture.  We enjoyed traditional dances from Ecuador, hilarious skits, and traditional music fresh out of the Andes.

My Paraguayan companero, Luis, and I had the opportunity to share a bit of the Paraguayan culture with the rest of the school as we sang 'How Great Thou Art' in English, Spanish and Guarani.  We had a lot of fun with it as another student who only spoke Spanish came up with us drinking terere.  He made it obvious that he didn't understand what we were saying in Guarani.  We then sang the well known hymn in each persons native language.  Afterward we paraded all the flags to the courtyard where a big surprise was awaiting everyone.

Helicopter rides!  The chance to lift off from the soccer field and soar over the campus was probably a once in a lifetime opportunity for most of the Latin students.  Eli and Toby went up with Daddy!  I'm not sure which of the boys were more excited but we all had a great time.

Below is a picture looking up through the flags at the helicopter passing over the courtyard.

And here is Toby waving at Mommy among the flags from up above!

It was a beautiful day!  It amazes me that Mexicans, Columbians, Peruvians, and Paraguayans celebrate the day we arrived on their shores.  It was inspiring and humbling to see their  enthusiasm for this holiday we share together.  It was a privilege to see Columbus day from their perspective- as Dia de la Raza- the day we became that much more international.  Truly a reason to celebrate.
