Terrific Toby

This child of mine, my second born son, is something else!
Something special actually.
March 17th he turned 6 years old.  The highlight?  He stayed up really late with me to decorate the clown cake he wanted.  I loved having that quiet, one on one time with him.  And look?  It looked just like one of Toby's drawings.  A monkey clown, he called it.

He is the child that invokes the strongest emotions from me, so far.  Whether happy, sad, frustrated, angry or excited.   I cry over him a lot.  He is compassionate.  Caring.  Artistic.  HILARIOUS.

Yet, for some reason, he is the one that always gets left behind.  It breaks this mother's heart but you can't force friends.  He is special.  God has something amazing in store for him that I can't even imagine.  For his birthday he asked for a guinea pig.  We obliged and after much searching (there was apparently a shortage of them at the time :) )Toby immediately picked out the black and white one.  He said he'd wait to name him until he found out if it was a boy or girl.  Boy.  Next day, decidedly he named him Max.  And he loved Max.  He sat right by Max's cage for school and sometimes got him out to learn with him.  Always kissed him and loved him.

Tonight was a sad night as Max died.  Something had been wrong for a while but Toby didn't notice.  Toby doesn't notice those things.  He decides to love and he just does.  Dan told him and I could hear Toby from the next room.  Like I said, I cry over him a lot.  Then he was quiet.  I held him.  We told the others.  We buried the thing.  Toby said "Goodbye Max".  We prayed.  And he's OK.  Dan and I were talking about how healthy of a reaction he had to grieve right away and let go.

I LOVE this little man in the making.
