Places We'll Miss: Pontillos Pizzeria

Ohhhh so good.  Pontillos pizza with well done mild chicken wings... there's nothing like it in the world.  I started on Pontillos when I was in junior high.  It was my mentor, Larry, who took me there for the first time.  He met me in the parking lot one night after church and asked if I wanted to join him and some other kids for pizza.  I felt scared at first, not knowing who this stranger was, but something about promises of making my wildest pizza dreams come true lured me in. Ever since then I've been hooked.

Of course I've introduced Sarah to 'Tillos' and our kids are prime candidates for becoming junkies as well.  For Sarah and I it's our favorite place to go on a date night.  After bonding over buffalo sauce we walk off our small pizza and a dozen wings along nearby Canandaigua Lake.  Now, I think it's safe to say that my wife is as big of a fan as I am.

We had been warned before our first term in Paraguay that we would go through withdraw as we said good bye to family and friends.  As for me, however, I never really got too emotional when thinking about family (sorry Mom and Dad) but if Pontillos pizza and wings were ever mentioned I instantly teared up.  As I recently partook in my last well done, mild Pontillos chicken wing I grieved the fact that we would soon be continents apart.

The Buffalo Wing was created not far from Pontillos in Buffalo New York back in 1964.  Their secret ingredient was Franks Redhot Sauce.  When we are in Paraguay I have bottles of Franks shipped down to me.  But it's safe to say that a real chicken wing is as scarce in Paraguay as a penguin. Indeed its hard to find a good chicken wing outside of Upstate New York and in my opinion nobody does pizza and wings quite as good as Pontillos- one of the places we'll really miss!
