2012 MK Adventure

(If you'd like to see this article in June's Ministry Update, click here.)
The Lord has blessed us with a missionary team that has many small children.  Many of them are our kids age and most of them are boys (sorry Sammie).
My South African buddy and I are committed to taking the older boys out each year on some form of adventure that resembles a cross between a tribal right-of-passage into manhood and an immature dare between two adolescents; “dare you to see how far you can take those kids down that swollen river using nothing but this bed frame and those barrels”… yeah, we did that.
So this year we took a group of seven boys up into some of Paraguay’s highest mountains for three days.  We saw multiple waterfalls, went cliff diving, hiked through open fields, and saw ancient writing on a stone wall.
Best of all we had some great discussions around several devotions shared by some of our leaders.  This was a kind of last-hurrah for one of my disciples, Denny (back, right in picture below), who will be heading off to Liberty University in just a few short weeks.
I asked Denny to lead one of the devotions and he chose to talk to the younger MKs about friendship, encouraging them to make the most of the relationships they have while they can (saying goodbyes is a constant reality for missionary kids).  Denny and I share a special friendship in which we are often teasing each other.  His latest attempt against me was spiking my soda with hot sauce... I won't say I didn't deserve it.
All in all everyone did a great job on the 2012 MK Adventure.  I heard hardly any complaining the whole trip and all of the boys overcame some impressive physical challenges hiking around 14 miles and climbing over 3000 vertical feet!  Not bad for our missionary kids… not bad for our missionary adults!
