So last night Dan and I were just chillin' on our bed after a long day. He was playing a game on his phone and I was reading on my netbook with my headphones in one ear, just in case we wanted to actually talk which of course we did because I can't be in a room with someone and not talk to them, at least a little bit. :) After the children had supposedly been settled for about an hour, we both heard a little screech. Now Judah is not sleeping very much these days during the night or for naptime anymore so we weren't too surprised. We were both pretty comfy though and hesitated at first to see who would get up and see what was going on. Dan reacts a lot faster than I do most times. :) All was well, he came back, got comfy again. A bit later that same sound. I didn't think it sounded like one of the kids. It sounded too "pixely" if that is a word or like it was coming through computer wires. Can't explain it but I was pretty sure it wasn't a child. Dan, however, thought it was and chided me for not wanting to check on so called "child" but then he remembered that I am the one with a stress fractured foot right now who is hobbling about at almost 24 weeks pregnant and he got up. All was well. But not a half hour later we both heard a very loud, disturbing shreek and both of us jumped up this time, first running to the kids' room but realizing together that it was coming from
outside! Outside our bathroom window to be exact. The more we listened it occurred to us that it was a pig screeching, not a child. But hey, you know, when Judah screeches sometimes it sounds an awful lot like a screeching pig.
We've become used to cows being right outside our windows on that side of the house like one night when we were up late watching a movie in our front room and it came to a silent part and we heard a cow peeing for a very long time (they must have big bladders!). All you can do at that point is look at each other and laugh. Yeah. But hadn't heard pigs before.

Well, this afternoon I investigated a bit and sure enough, there is a GIGANTIC sow with 12 spanking new piglets right beside our house. We guessed that maybe she was giving birth last night?! Aren't they tiny? And clean? Instantly made me think "Wilbur".
So herein lies another dichotomy of where we live: very rural with only dirt roads; cows, pigs, sheep and chickens are common sights (I mean, even right next door! Is that healthy? Pigs don't thrill me because of piques) However, my front yard was also filled with dust blowing in the breeze as pickup trucks and motorcycles went up and down the road all day long.

We live right across from the plaza (where there was a huge meeting this afternoon) and around the corner from the local club. Open air club. Think no sound ordinances and no roof. Dan saw a truck go by with speakers so we knew tonight was going to be a loud one. I'm not being "disappointed" as I sit here and write this. It started about 5 pm, just before sunset. At least I can't hear the sow snorting or the cow peeing and I'm trying to overrun the beat with Christmas guitar music blaring in the kids' room. I try. :)
Good story. Keeping you in our thoughts and prayers, that your foot heals well and your pregnancy continues to go well.
ReplyDeleteA fractured foot?!? What are you doing there (other than just laughing at all the craziness that goes on)? :)
ReplyDeleteDo I see a pet pig in your future? ;)
