Orality PowWow

Thursday morning we loaded the family in the truck and headed 45 minutes south to a town called San Francisco where our teammates the Floyds and McKissicks live. (the pavement ends in our town Caazapa so two weeks ago I mentally planned NOT to take this drive again till after the baby was born. Oh well. What’s one more time? But this was the LAST time.)

Tony Floyd had planned this get together and affectionately acronymed it: Preparing Oral Ways to Win an Oral World. This PowWow (#3) brought together again all the rural and rural-hearted missionaries serving with our mission SIM to go over evangelism track stories they had assigned to each person at the last meeting. Also present was our Assistant Director Tom Stout who is the catalyst behind the Guarani Recording Task Force. Previously this group had gone through the Bible from Genesis to Revelation and chosen which stories could be recorded orally in the heart language of Guarani, touching all the basic foundational biblical truths in each set and clarifying broken “rungs” in the typical Paraguayan’s theology. Thirty broken rungs had been determined by a group of Paraguayan leaders currently serving the various SIM church plants. Working with a rural culture involves a lot of story telling, parables as such, for teaching as a majority of the people cannot read or write.

I usually don’t sit in on these meetings but this day I did and it was very interesting. The list consisted of 28 story sets. In our case each story set was an evangelistic bible study to be prepared word for word in Guarani for future recording. Dan had stayed up late the night before finishing the six he was responsible for: 7, 16, 18, 20, 27, 28. We began with set one and before our day ended we had progressed all the way to story set number four!

It is fascinating, watching and listening to the dynamics of our team. God has brought together some gifted men and women and to sit and see the body of Christ working together, balancing each other, complimenting each other, was very rewarding. It was especially rewarding to see my husband’s role in the discussions. I shouldn’t be surprised but I am always awed by his Bible knowledge and confidence in the Word. His study and understanding of the Scriptures is such a solid rock for me as I continue to learn and grow.

One thing that struck me funny about the meeting was all the computers. Here we were basically in the middle of no where and the table was covered with laptops. The house we were meeting in had recently put up a special antenna providing wireless internet. Amidst deep, intense theological discussions, our teammates were looking up Hebrew definitions, sharing files, messaging each other and there was even a Skype call from the US received. Technology is a wonder isn’t it?

We are so blessed to be a part of what God is doing here in Paraguay.
(If you are wondering what the children were doing all this time they were running around being knights and super heroes and cowboys, etc. Sammie stays close to me so she had fun discovering new toys and eventually took a nap. With all the other children around to play with, being part of a team has its benefits.)
